over $1 billion, William Penn Foundation is one of the
largest foundations in the Philadelphia region, and
was ranked the 45th largest foundation in the country
in 2004 (Source: Foundation Center "Top 100 U.S.
Foundations by Asset Size").
Founded in 1945 by Phoebe and Otto Haas (one of the
founders of the Rohm and Haas Company), the William
Penn Foundation supports nonprofit organizations working
in the Philadelphia region, and concentrates its giving
in three major grant areas: Arts & Culture, Children,
Youth & Families; and Environment & Communities.
In 2003, William Penn awarded 205 grants totaling $61.2
million, and paid $60 million on 377 active grants.
William Penn employs over 20 professional staff and
is governed by an 11-member board of directors, which
still includes several members of the Haas family.
