About Grantmaking and Philanthropy

Getting Started in Philanthropy

Motivation for Giving
The motivations for establishing a philanthropic foundation or giving program are varied. For individuals, the motivation may be a desire to make a difference on issues they care about, while availing themselves of tax advantages by moving a portion of their assets into a philanthropic entity. Families may be motivated by a desire to engage the next generation by teaching their children about the value and rewards of giving. For corporations, the motivation may be to support their communities while building brand identity and enhancing the company's reputation among employees and customers alike.

Types of Giving
Charitable gifts can be made in a number of forms (such as cash, appreciated stock, artwork or real estate) and through a variety of giving vehicles. When evaluating options for giving, it is important to make a choice that reflects your personal or corporate values, matches your giving style, and helps to achieve your charitable goals. When assessing your options for giving, you should consider:
Your desired level of control over assets and decision-making
The time commitment you want to make to your giving
The desired scope and length of your giving
Your interest in involving family members
The size of giving and the tax benefits
