Assets of PA Foundations Established in the 1990s with Assets Over $20 Million
  • Fifteen new grantmaking foundations with 1999 assets over $20 million were established in Pennsylvania during the 1990s.
  • 60% of these foundations were established in the Southeastern Pennsylvania region.
  • Foundations newly established in the Central Pennsylvania region had the largest 1999 asset base, averaging $57 million.
  • Two of the new foundations, Jewish Healthcare Foundation of Pittsburgh and Birmingham Foundation, are health conversion foundations.

    (Note: A health conversion foundation is established upon the sale of a nonprofit health entity to a profit- making corporation. According to the Council on Foundations, under law, if the hospitalšs status changes from nonprofit to for- profit, a portion of the assets must be earmarked for charitable purposes.)
