| Assets of PA Foundations Established in the 1990s with Assets Over $20 Million |
Fifteen new grantmaking foundations with 1999 assets
over $20 million were established in Pennsylvania during the 1990s.
60% of these foundations were established in the
Southeastern Pennsylvania region.
Foundations newly established in the Central Pennsylvania
region had the largest 1999 asset base, averaging $57 million.
Two of the new foundations, Jewish Healthcare Foundation
of Pittsburgh and Birmingham Foundation, are health conversion foundations.
(Note: A health conversion foundation is established upon the sale of
a nonprofit health entity to a profit- making corporation. According to
the Council on Foundations, under law, if the hospitalšs status changes
from nonprofit to for- profit, a portion of the assets must be earmarked
for charitable purposes.)
