Community foundations represent a relatively small but vital
component of the foundation universe.
Community foundations pool the resources of many donors
and focus their grantmaking on a particular city, county or region.
From 1992 to 1999 Pennsylvania community foundations
grew vigorously:
Community foundations account for .8% of the foundations
in Pennsylvania and 3.2% of the grants awarded.
By the end of the decade there were 37 community
foundations, +131%.
Grants awarded increased from $17 to $41.5 million, +104%
(adjusted for inflation).
