This report indicates that philanthropic giving is strong in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, but that there is clearly untapped potential
for more. Although we rank third largest in the nation for foundation assets, between 1992 and 1999 corporate foundations' giving share dropped
from 14% to 9% of Pennsylvania's grant dollars, and the Commonwealth ranks 38th in the nation in the Generosity Index, which is based on
individual charitable giving.
There is no doubt that the recent robust economy, which fueled great personal wealth and investment returns, played a significant role in
the growth of philanthropy reflected in this report. However, much can and should be done to encourage new and additional charitable giving
by individuals and to stimulate the creation and growth of organized giving vehicles - such as corporate and independent foundations, corporate
giving programs, donor advised funds, giving circles, funding collaboratives, and charitable bequests.
This report represents just part of a needed comprehensive effort to grow philanthropic giving in Pennsylvania. It serves as a benchmark and reflects the striking regional differences, diverse range,
and impact of giving in Pennsylvania. We hope it also provides the motivation to inspire more philanthropy
to meet the critical needs of so many of our citizens and ensure that all of our communities have a high
quality of life in the years to come. These various stakeholders can work to increase private giving in the
