We support The Philanthropic Initiative's recommendations for actions:

  • Communications and media: Develop people's knowledge of philanthropy. Raise awareness and market the concept of philanthropy through communications and media- related approaches.

  • Public policy: Support public policy that encourages philanthropy. Tax incentives have always been a strong inducement to individual donors, translating corporate, community and individual wealth into philanthropic opportunities that, in turn, benefit all communities. Progressive, flexible and simple tax and regulatory policy encourages philanthropic giving. Conversely, unnecessarily restrictive and cumbersome legislation and regulations are disincentives.

  • "Democratize" philanthropy: Encourage a broader understanding of philanthropy to include philanthropy by all people, not just the wealthy.

  • Target marketing: Reach out to specific population groups with strategies geared toward those groups. Target markets include: corporations without giving programs, maturing business owners, new business owners, wealth inheritors, new wealth, youth groups, women, families and every single minority group. Remember that philanthropy as a mindset starts at an early age, so encourage activities that educate young people to adopt philanthropic values.

  • Peer- to- peer strategies: Increase the participation of people in philanthropy through a variety of peer- to- peer and mentoring approaches. Use both existing networks and create new mechanisms of peer interaction. n Advisor strategies: Reach donors by educating their advisors - such as accountants, insurance agents, bankers, financial planners, and attorneys - about philanthropy and the positive role it can play for individuals and society.

  • Performance data and research: Increase the quality and accessibility of public information about nonprofit organizations, grantmaking effectiveness, community foundations, and options for giving.

  • New delivery systems: Develop new delivery systems for philanthropy, appropriately replicated from the investment world.
