Spotlight on Women Donors

Growing affluence has allowed women from all age groups and economic backgrounds to use the concepts and tools of mainstream philanthropy-private and family foundations, public and community foundations, and corporate giving programs, among them - to support the causes they care about most.

Recent research by the Women's Philanthropy Institute that examines and documents diverse patterns of women's participation in philanthropy indicates that while women have the same "core motivations" for giving as men-altruism, gratitude, and the desire to make a better world-they approach giving differently. Grounded in a tradition of volunteerism and sharing, women donors emphasize partnership and engagement. The unprecedented wealth and power now shared by women in this country is transforming fundraising and philanthropy overall.

RESOURCES FOR WOMEN DONORS:

A Plan of One's Own, developed by the New Ventures in Philanthropy initiative of the Forum of Regional Associations of Grantmakers, serves as a helpful companion for women who wish to create a personal charitable giving plan. A multitude of options and strategies for giving are offered. The easily accessible 44-page guide includes information about making a direct gift to an established charity, developing a corporate giving program or foundation, exploring planned giving options, and giving through volunteering and skill-sharing. The philanthropic landscape is described in detail, from giving circles to family foundations to venture philanthropy. An ample resource section and bibliography afford additional inspiration to give effectively.
