Most of these foundations were created through the sale of a nonprofit hospital to a for-profit corporation, and many of these "conversion" foundations are emerging as prominent funders in their communities.

  Foundation Center's Update on Health Policy Grantmaking (March 2004)
Focuses on trends in grantmaking from 1995 through 2003 based on an analysis of all grants of $10,000 or higher awarded by more than 1,000 of the nation's largest private and community foundations. Also available from the Foundation Center is "Health Policy Research and Foundation Grantmaking: Identifying Where Foundations Fill the Gap."

Grantmakers In Health (GIH) is a nonprofit, educational organization dedicated to fostering communication and collaboration among grantmakers and others, and to help strengthen the grantmaking community's knowledge, skills, and effectiveness.
