Trustee-Managed and Family
Foundations
Most of the private foundations in the U.S. were set-up
by families and are run by either small staffs or by
trustees. These foundations vary in asset-size and in
their funding interests and geographical service areas,
but they also share much in common. From honoring the
legacy and intent of the primary donor, to managing
family dynamics as they relate to the management of
the foundation, to determining the direction of the
foundation under the leadership of future generations,
these organizations have many challenges and interests
that are unique to family philanthropy.
