Commonwealth Giving:
A Report on Pennsylvania
Philanthropy
(March 2008)

We are excited to announce the release of Commonwealth Giving: A Report on Pennsylvania Philanthropy, a new study that reveals the magnitude and trends in individual and foundation giving in the state between 1995 to 2005.

PAGivingReport

The report, a joint venture between DVG and our colleagues at Grantmakers of Western Pennsylvania (GWP) in Pittsburgh, is the first overview of giving in the commonwealth compiled since 2001 (see sidebar to the right).  With data supplied by the Foundation Center and analyzed by the Economy League of Greater Philadelphia, the study provides a benchmark of how Pennsylvania giving compares to national philanthropic trends. The report also presents a comparison of charitable giving in the Central, Northeast, Northwest, Southeast and Southwest regions of Pennsylvania.

Key findings from the 2008 study include:

As of 2005:

Pennsylvania’s $8.4 billion of foundation and individual giving ranks 7th among all other states in the country, accounting for 3.6% of total U.S. giving.

Individuals in Pennsylvania gave approximately three times more ($6 billion) than foundations ($2 billion).

Arts, Culture & Humanities received the largest share (22%) of foundation grants, followed by Education (21%) and Health (15%)

More than half (52%) of the grants awarded by Pennsylvania foundations remained in the commonwealth.

Between 1995 and 2005:

While total giving in Pennsylvania increased 104% over the decade, Pennsylvania’s share of U.S. giving decreased from 4.5% to 3.6%.

Pennsylvania foundations increased their support of the Arts, Health and Environment, while support for Education declined.

While Southeast Pennsylvania accounts for more than half of the commonwealth’s grantmaking and foundation assets, the largest foundation growth was seen in Northwest and Northeast Pennsylvania, increasing 142% and 137% respectively.
