"COMMON WEALTH: GIVING IN PENNSYLVANIA - A Report on the State's Philanthropy"

Covering the period from 1992 to 1999, this 29-page study focuses on growth and giving trends of Pennsylvania's independent, corporate, and community foundations; identifies charitable causes and special population groups that are supported by the state's foundations; and presents a regional analysis of where charitable dollars are directed in the Commonwealth, including comparisons with U.S. figures. The report briefly touches on individual giving, including estate bequest information.

GRANTMAKING BASICS: A Field Guide for Funders ($55)
  By Barbara D. Kibbe, Fred Setterberg and Colburn S. Wilbur. This updated version of Grantmaking Basics is a joint publication from the Council on Foundations and the David and Lucile Packard Foundation and is a must-have for anyone new to the field of grantmaking. The 120-page publication includes chapters on: How to Review Grant Proposals; Conducting Site Visits and Interviews; Learning to Look at Nonprofit Finances; Board/Staff Communications; and Cultivating Professional Skills Throughout Your Career. REGIONAL EQUITY: Challenges, Successes and Solutions >available in PDF only
  By Janet Heroux, M.H.S., M.B.A. (2004, 9 pages). Summary report from a meeting convened in November, 2004 by DVG and the Council of New Jersey Grantmakers and sponsored by the Ford Foundation. The meeting represented the the culmination of an 18-month initiative to identify philanthropic leadership in New Jersey and southeastern Pennsylvania, inform these grantmakers about regional equity issues and create an environment where they could discuss regional equity demonstration strategies in community development.

OVERCOMING THE JITTERS: The Uneasy Relationship Between Philanthropy and the Media and Ways to Improve It
  Qualitative Research Study for the Urban Institute Center on Nonprofits and Philanthropy; Conducted by Burness Communications. (1998; 50 pages plus Executive Summary) Based on the results of telephone interviews, this report seeks to provide a better understanding of the dynamic between philanthropy and the media, and offers concrete recommendations for improving the way these fields communicate with each other.
